Microsoft's IE will drop under 50% share by mid-2012

Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) will lose its place as the majority browser next summer, according to statistics published today by Web metrics company Net Applications.

If the pace of IE's decline over the last 12 months continues, IE will drop under the 50% mark in June 2012.

In August, IE lost about seven-tenths of a percentage point in usage share, falling to 55.3%, a new low for the once-dominant browser. In the last year, IE has dropped 6.9 points.

But Microsoft continued today to stress the success of IE9, the edition launched last March, particularly on Windows 7.

On that newer operating system, IE9 accounts for 20.4% of all browsers globally, and 27.7% on Windows 7 in the U.S., said Roger Capriotti, director of IE marketing, in an interview today.

"That's how we measure success in the IE business," said Capriotti, referring to Microsoft's focus on IE9 and Windows 7.

IE9 runs on Windows 7 and Vista, but does not work on Windows XP, the decade-old operating system that still powers more of the world's PCs than any other OS.

Capriotti refused to be dragged into a discussion of the impact of IE's overall decline, and what it would mean to Microsoft when the browser slips under 50%.

IMO: I think it's no wonder. Because they do not support IE 9 on Windows XP. How can they destroy their own XP, by not supporting it on Windows XP that has been made famous in his time. And reality shows XP users are still dominant.

I suppose that by making ie9 only available for Win 7 Microsoft figured it would help to boost sales, but like you say, there are still lots of XP users out there and the strategy may back fire on them!

Not sure if it will drop below 50% but i do use chrome for the forum as it is faster than IE9 for me at least, i will still use IE, some people just use the browser for nothing more than accessing the web or maybe too stubborn to change... funny how they get the stats and i wonder how many members here took part in any survey.

im a fan of XP and like to have it around but it will be a third choice O/S at this point.

    Appreciate the thread Solin..

It's a measure of IE's dominance that competitors and onlookers should regard dropping below 50% market share as newsworthy. Even if/when the figure drops below 50%, IE's market share will still be much more substantial than any other browser.

Jay - Chrome is very fast but have you noticed the difference between Chrome's installed size compared with other browsers?

My Firefox program file folder is 31.4MB. Chrome's program file folder is 276MB and the entry for Chrome in Programs and Features lists it as 133MB!! And I believe those figures are much higher again if Chrome is the default browser.

Microsoft is more than happy to see XP go

They are just giving it a shove by denying it IE 9

yes a few years later the fate of Win 7 and 8 also will be the same as the fate of XP, and so on. You'll look like an obedient or you will look like the victim of a marketing system that imposed for the sake of profit. Or the satisfaction of users in priority..
